Lovely campus, great kids, generally great staff, though there is a very high number of locals, which makes it a bit hard to integrate. They are all very friendly, but when a place is 'home' you already have so many support networks - this takes a lot of time to break into and I'm not sure if you will be able to completely break into this within the few years that international teachers are around. Professional development is quite poor because the cost of it is quite high - getting out of Harare is expensive, plus only a few seemed to be able to access this. You can save, but don't expect to save a lot if you want to do some travel. You must have a car - there are many options locally. School will help with all of this. Housing is great - but in desperate need of updating... it is old and tired. IB school in theory, not so sure how much it is in practice. Enjoyed our time here.
Our experience was atypical, due in part to policital problems the school was developing with the local government. We did not receive work visas, despite repeated assurances by administration that we would receive them (there were about 6 teachers out of our group of 30 that had the same problem). We went home for the holidays with just carry-on baggage, on the assurance that we would be met upon return by someone and escorted through immigration (since we didn't yet have visas); just call before you leave your home country, we were told. On January 2nd when we called we were told "Oh, we've cancelled your return tickets because it doesn't look like the visas will ever come through. Sorry for the inconvenience." Inconvenience! I'll say it was! Our entire household was then kept in Zimbabwe until we obtained work visas in Egypt; we didn't see our household goods for 18 months. We will never return to Zimbabwe. As I said, our experience was atypical. It was so horrible, though, that we wouldn't go back and would strongly recommend being very cautious if you're considering HIS.
