The school does not support shipping to the DR. Teachers can only bring in what they can carry, but the school pays $500US for extra baggage. However, you may find, as a number of us did, that your airlines suddenly puts on an embargo limiting you to two suitcases. We all had to dismantle our bags, re-prioritize, repack and send the rest back with whoever drove us to the airport. There is no public transport to speak of, certainly none that serves the school, and driving is among the world's most dangerous. It is a third world country with first world prices; you won't save as much as you might elsewhere. And it's very hot and humid. Crime such as petty theft is high, but apartments are very secure. Just don't flash your bling and you'll be fine. Pension is 3% 3% which is below anywhere else I've been. Enough with the downside. The upside is the school. The campus is beautiful, the facilities are good, the admin team is solid, colleagues are talented, support staff are wonderful and the kids are great if you don't mind the noise. It is not really an international school as over 90% of students hold Dominican passports. (If you're whole teaching career has been in China, do not apply!) Make sure you get out of Santo Domingo once a month, and you'll love it here.
The travel opportunities within the country are amazing, there are multiple beach towns to travel to. You can also explore the mountains and the desert area if you wish. The old part of the city "The Colonial Zone" provides a unique and rich nightlife with many restaurants and sightseeing options. Traveling outside the country is not as easy and flights out of Santo Domingo are a little on the pricy side.
